For Nakanojo Biennale 2017 we built and hung a house, where you can glance between Inside and Outside through the windows created by 110 sixth graders in Nakanojo Elementary School during our workshop.

The Japanese words “Interior - uchi” and “Exterior - soto” mean “Inside/Outside of a limited space” and also “The side to which you belong (=home) / you do not belong” in other words, “in-group/out-group”. After introduced to the Japanese's unique concept of "Uchi / Soto" mentality seen in traditional buildings and human relationships, the children drew their own windows by riflecting upon the theme of “Between Interior and Exterior”.

The concept of Uchi-Soto(Inside-Outside) is one of the most unique aspects of Japanese social custom, which is complex and dynamic. This duality depends and changes, based on the situations and the circumstances.

This hanging house asks to us "Which side is In and which side is Out?"
